Sandakan to host World Swiftlet Convention

SANDAKAN: A World Swiftlet Convention (WSC) is in the works to discuss, among others, the commodity’s potential and prospects to industry players, according to organising chairman Datu Omar Ali Datu Bachtiyal.

The convention is expected to be held sometime in March. Omar said the convention would have participants coming from China, Korea, Singapore, Brunei, Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand. An invitation is being extended to all swiftlet ranchers in the country to participate in the convention.

“We’re working to ensure that the World Swiftlet Convention is a reality soon, and we hope government and private agencies will assist in helping us achieve this.” said Omar.

He added that such a convention would also be important event for the economic growth of Sandakan and Sabah.
“Sandakan is renowned with the existence of the Gomantong caves… but we have not seen any efforts in promotion to attract investors. So, I’m sure the convention will help to place Sandakan in the eyes of the world.” said Omar.
“My goal, together with Syarikat Gerak Borneo one of the participants, is to ensure that Sandakan becomes one of the leading producers of birds’ nests.” said Omar.
