Efforts to develop swiftlet farming continues: Minister

PUTRAJAYA: Efforts to develop the swiftlet farming industry continue despite the arising issues which threaten the overseas market of Malaysian bird's nests, especially to China.

Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said among the issues or problems faced was restricted sales of the product which affected returns on investment in the industry and which also caused falling market price of the product.

"However, the Government is not doing nothing and but has directly taken the initiative to address the problems through high-level discussions and negotiations," he said at the opening of the Edible Bird's Nest Industry Conference 2014, here, Tuesday.

His speech text was read out by the ministry's Deputy Secretary-General Datuk Raihan Sharif.

The Minister said that through such efforts, Malaysian bird's nests could be exported again to China through eight local companies which had been certified by the authorities in China.

He said the second batch comprised 15 companies which had been audited by the Certification and Accreditation Administration of the People's Republic of China (CNCA) and were expected to receive the audit results soon, he said.

Ismail Sabri said the Veterinary Services Department (VSD) had also sent in applications to the CNCA for the third group involving nine more companies to export swiftlet bird's nests to China.

"The VSD is still receiving many applications from companies which are keen to export bird's nests to China.

The issue of bird's nest export from Malaysia to China arose in July 2011 after the media in China questioned the quality of the product.

Inspections carried out found that the red bird's nests contained nitrates that exceeded 1,000ppm, which could pose a risk to the consumers' health.

China, however, reportedly withdrew the import ban on Malaysian swiftlet bird's nests from last Dec 25.

Ismail Sabri said the VSD had organised courses related to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) for those involved in processing bird's nests so as to meet the CNCA's audit quality requirements.

The Minister said Malaysia had exported 120 tonnes of bird's nests worth RM114 million in the first 10 months of this year and the volume was expected to increase to 150 tonnes by the year-end.

He said the bird's nest industry was a high-impact entry point project (EPP) with a targeted export of 870 tonnes worth RM5.2 billion by 2020. – Bernama

Quality edible bird'nest

To improve raw nest quality, these are the few major points:

1. Internal cleanliness of house.

2. Proper ventilation

3. Correct humidity and temperature.

The above are basic but fundamental condition to get high quality nest.

Optimum humidity = 80% - 85%

Optimum temperature = 28 - 30 degree Celsius. 

If you can manage the above 2 conditions chances are you will get good quality nest. But on top of that,  cleanliness inside the house is of utmost importance.

Good Manufacturing Practice for Raw-Unclean Edible-Birdnest (EBN)This Code of Veterinary Practice (CoVP) prescribes GMP and requirements of raw-unclean EBN harvested from caves or ranches in the production of quality and safe raw-unclean EBN which may include but not limiting to sorting, pre-cleaning, drying, weighing, packing and labelling activities; specification of raw-unclean EBN which determines the quality, physical, and grading requirement of raw-unclean EBN.

NANNING: A national-level bird’s nest inspection laboratory would be set up at the China-Malaysia Qinzhou Industrial Park (CMQIP) in Guangxi province, said Malaysia-China Business Council (MCBC) chairman Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting.

Ong, who led a delegation to attend the 11th Malaysia-China Joint Business Council here, said there is an urgent need for the bird’s nest trade between both countries to recover and expand.

“Both countries have agreed on the export of bird’s nests that have passed the food safety inspection.

“We have researchers on bird’s nests and representatives from bird’s nest traders in this delegation to discuss with CMQIP on the operations of the lab,” Ong, who is also the Prime Minister’s special envoy to China, said.

In July 2011, China imposed a ban on the import of cleaned bird’s nests from Malaysia when they were found to contain excessive level of nitrite.

The ban was lifted in December 2013 and currently, eight Malaysian companies are given the permission to export cleaned bird’s nests.

Before the ban, some 250 tonnes of bird’s nests were exported to China.

Authorities from both countries are now looking at the entry of raw, uncleaned bird’s nests into China.

Malaysian Federation of Bird’s Nest Traders Association president Datuk Lee Kong Heng said the association believed that the establishment of the lab would help accelerate the export of uncleaned bird’s nests to China.

“We need to export uncleaned bird’s nests because we do not have the capacity to process the nests produced by some 60,000 swiftlet houses nationwide,” he said.

The association’s vice-president Liw Chong Liong expressed hope that the lab could contribute to developing various products with the extracts of bird’s nests, providing more ways to use the bird’s nests instead of just consuming them as dietary supplements.

“There will be competition among the China and Malaysia bird’s nest merchants when the raw bird’s nests are allowed to be exported, but with the huge market in China, we believe they will be beneficial to the industry in the long run,” he said.

Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman Medicine and Health Sciences Faculty head of programme Prof Dr Lim Yang Mooi, one of the researchers in the delegation, said the delegation would explore the possibility of collaborating with the bird’s nest lab in CMQIP.

“We will be looking at both upstream and downstream activities, including processing raw bird’s nests and conducting fundamental researches on the medicinal values of bird’s nests,” she said.

CMQIP administrative committee executive deputy director Fan Li said the construction of the lab is near completion and the facility could be put into operations by end-October.

Occupying 55 sq km for a planned population of 500,000, CMQIP is the sister park of the Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park.

This is the first government-to-government mega industrial park project between the two countries. Ong and the delegation would visit QIP today.

The best quality bird's nest are only produce in Malaysia. More than 20 birdnest producers had adopted food safety system as well as traceability in their production chain.

Stringent auditing and checking by government agency and third party auditing as well as enfocerment put the industry ahead of Thailand and Indonesia.

Quality and food safety is of utmost important for customer confident mainly from importing China.

Less swiftlet in town now

I have received a lots of report saying that there are less swiftlet in town now especially Bintulu.

Though there is no scientific evidence to proof this statement but producers claims the production had reduced to more than 20 % compare to two years ago. 

The most likely cause would be migration of bird from town to rural where plenty of insects for food and the availability of good and suitable place or premises which also located outside the town area.
